The two Brazilian men, Jones Sousa dos Santos, 27, and Diego Dias, 20.accused of murdering Irish holiday maker Paul Houston in Alvor, on September 6th 2009, today received a sentence of 14.5 years each, close to the maximum possible sentence of 16 years. Both will also have to pay the victims wife Euros 40,000. The judge in her summing up refuted the last minute change of testimony of Ebert Sergio as she said it conflicted with other evidence. The judge did not give leniency to the younger accused although it was within her power to do so due to his age. She said the neither had shown remorse and their claim of being drunk was no excuse. The Houston family said afterwards that they had come to see justice done, and this had happened. They were very complementary of the Portuguese Police and justice system which they said had treated them with respect and consideration.
